Scientists have been trying to develop a technology that allows for easy protein sequencing. Professor Giovanni Maglia has made a breakthrough in this area by discovering a way to transport proteins through a tiny hole called a nanopore, making it possible to sequence proteins using a handheld device.

Currently, there are devices on the market that can sequence DNA using nanopore technology. DNA is pulled through a nanopore in a membrane, allowing the sequence of building blocks to be read. However, proteins are more difficult to sequence because they are like cooked spaghetti and do not want to be pushed through a tiny hole.

To overcome this challenge, Maglia used a solution of electrically charged particles called ions to pull proteins through the nanopore. Computer simulations confirmed that the flow of ions would be strong enough to move proteins through the nanopore. Even proteins with negative charges were successfully transported through the nanopore.

This breakthrough means that there are no longer any fundamental limitations to protein sequencing. Maglia plans to make this technology available through his startup, Portal Biotech, for use in labs and by doctors.

Sequencing proteins is important because they are the workers in our bodies, carrying out various functions and processes. By studying proteins, scientists can gain insight into how cells work and develop better treatments for diseases.
