Ichikawa Eno, a famous Kabuki actor known for combining traditional elements with modern theater technology, has passed away in Tokyo at the age of 83. He was the founder of “Super Kabuki” and gained recognition for his spectacular performances, including “flying” over audiences using ropes, an act he performed over 5,000 times and earned a Guinness World Record for. Eno, whose real name was Masahiko Kinoshi, was diagnosed with a brain infarction in 2003 but made a brief return to the stage in 2012. He worked on Super Kabuki productions since 1986, incorporating modern dialogue, music, sound effects, and elaborate costumes. Eno’s death comes at a difficult time for the Kabuki world, as his nephew and fellow Kabuki actor, Ichikawa Ennosuke IV, was recently indicted for allegedly assisting in his parents’ suicide. Eno’s legacy as a pioneer in Kabuki theater will be remembered.
