The Supreme Court of Pakistan has overturned changes made to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), 1999 and accepted a petition filed by Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The court’s decision includes reopening corruption cases against public officials that were closed due to the amendments. The Chief Justice, along with one other justice, ruled in favor of Imran’s plea, while another justice disagreed. Last year, the National Assembly passed bills to abolish election reforms and make amendments to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws. In June 2022, Imran filed a petition challenging the changes made to the NAO, claiming that they were meant to benefit influential individuals and legitimize corruption. The Supreme Court had reserved judgment on the petition earlier this month. The changes made to the NAB (Second Amendment) Bill 2021 include appointing the bureau’s deputy chairman as the acting chairman after the completion of the chairman’s term and reducing the terms of the chairman and the bureau’s prosecutor general. The bill also excludes regulatory bodies from NAB’s jurisdiction and limits NAB’s jurisdiction to cases involving over Rs500 million.
