An Islamabad court has granted bail to PTI President Parvez Elahi in a case related to riots that took place outside the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) in March. The clashes occurred between police and PTI workers during a hearing for the Toshakhana case. Elahi is one of several PTI leaders and workers who have been arrested following violent riots in the country. He has been arrested 11 times since June. Elahi was re-arrested on September 5, hours after the Islamabad High Court had suspended his detention and ordered his release. An anti-terrorism court had granted police a two-day physical remand of the former Punjab chief minister. During the hearing, Elahi’s lawyers argued that he was not mentioned in the first information report (FIR) and that the prosecution had not found anything during his remand. Both lawyers requested the court to grant bail, while the prosecutor opposed it. Ultimately, the court accepted Elahi’s bail plea against surety bonds of Rs20,000. The case against Elahi involves charges such as rioting, unlawful assembly, obstruction of a public servant’s duty, theft, and terrorism. The clashes on March 18 were marked by violence between the police and PTI workers, with allegations of shelling and arson from both sides.
