The US State Department has urged Pakistan to hold free, fair, and timely elections in accordance with the law. This comes following a letter from President Arif Alvi to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suggesting that the polls should be held no later than November 6. The US State Department Spokesperson, Mathew Miller, emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law in the electoral process. Alvi’s letter was the fourth he had written to Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja regarding elections in the country. Political experts view this move by the president as unnecessary, as he has not provided a clear date for the polls, only stating that they should not go beyond November 6. The president cited Article 48(5) of the Constitution, which he believes empowers him to fix a date within 90 days of the dissolution of the National Assembly. However, the CEC, the law ministry, and the four provincial governments all believe that the ECP has the authority to decide the election date. The president suggested that the ECP seek guidance from the superior judiciary to announce a single date for the general elections. The US State Department spokesperson also emphasized the importance of the relationship between Pakistan and the United States and encouraged both countries to resolve the Torkham border issue between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
