A special court has granted bail to Asad Umar, a leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party. The bail relates to a case concerning the alleged misuse of a diplomatic cipher, which former Prime Minister Imran Khan claimed as evidence of an attempted government removal. The Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Abul Hasnaat Muhammad Zulqarnain has been appointed to hear cases registered under the Official Secrets Act nationwide. Umar’s bail was approved on the condition of a Rs50,000 surety bond. The PTI’s legal affairs spokesperson confirmed Umar’s bail, stating that there is no evidence or material against him. Umar was arrested on August 20 in connection with the cipher case. Another politician, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, has also been detained in the same case and is currently in Adiala Jail. Imran Khan’s judicial remand in the cipher case has been extended for another 14 days. He has been imprisoned since August 5 in the Toshakhana case and is currently held in Attock Jail.
