Russian President Vladimir Putin met with North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un at the Vostochny cosmodrome in Russia. While Russia was thought to be looking for an arms deal with North Korea, no major announcements were made on weapons. The meeting took place amidst Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which has caused the Kremlin to seek allies and military equipment elsewhere. Kim expressed his country’s interest in building relations with Russia, citing Russia’s defense of its state sovereignty. Russia is reportedly seeking to buy artillery ammunition from North Korea for its invasion of Ukraine. However, military analysts believe that an arms deal between Russia and North Korea is unlikely to change the outcome of the war. During the meeting, Putin also offered to help North Korea build space satellites, a project that Kim has prioritized. The summit ended with a toast to Russian-Korean friendship and featured a five-hour discussion and a dinner with a variety of dishes and Russian wines.
