Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met in the Russian Far East to discuss expanding military cooperation. The meeting took place at the Vostochny Cosmodrome space launch center, with the main agenda likely focusing on North Korea providing weapons, ammunition, and technology to support Russia’s war efforts. The meeting occurred shortly after North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan. Kim arrived in Russia by special train and expressed the strategic importance of the relationship between North Korea and Russia. After the talks, Kim is scheduled to visit a factory in Komsomolsk-on-Amur that manufactures aircraft. Moscow has faced sanctions from G7 nations and other countries since its war on Ukraine began. In response to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, the United States and its allies, Japan and South Korea, have strengthened their defense collaboration. Kim’s last meeting with a foreign leader was in 2019 with former US President Donald Trump.
