Humber College in Toronto has partnered with online home share technology platform Spaces Shared to help students find affordable housing by pairing them with seniors who have extra space. Over 500 students have already signed up for the program. The students can save money by doing tasks around the house or providing companionship to the seniors. The program allows students to live with hosts and pay through an online platform. Humber College is not the only school trying to alleviate housing pressures through partnerships with seniors. Georgian College in Barrie has also signed up for a similar program. One international student, Awofadeju Olajide Simon, found a great living arrangement with an elderly couple, Hubert and Monica Campfens. The couple has been renting out rooms to international students for 33 years and enjoys sharing their home and experiences with younger generations. Simon says that living with the Campfens made him feel at home. The program creates a win-win situation for students and hosts, as finding affordable housing can be challenging for students, especially international students. Humber College is still looking for more hosts, and Hubert encourages other seniors to open their doors to international students.
