Miss South Africa 2023 first runner-up, Bryoni Govender, will represent South Africa at the Miss Universe pageant. The current Miss South Africa, Natasha Joubert, chose not to participate due to past disappointment and depression. Bryoni Govender is the first person of Indian heritage to represent South Africa since 1997. The pageant will take place in El Salvador for the first time since 1975. Bryoni expressed excitement and plans to give her all in the competition. Natasha Joubert shared that her past experience caused depression and she wants to focus on other ways of representing her country. South Africa has had recent success at Miss Universe, with winners in 2017 and 2019 and runners-up in 2018 and 2021. The Miss Universe pageant will also feature transgender and married participants for the first time. Several countries will be returning to the competition, including Pakistan and Zimbabwe after a long absence.
