Vodacom has launched the #CodeLikeaGirl programme to train young girls in coding and STEM fields. The programme will take place from 2 to 6 October 2023 at 19 Schools of Excellence and online. It is aimed at high school girls between the ages of 14 and 18. The coding boot camp is part of Vodacom’s efforts to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields in South Africa. Currently, women make up only one-third of researchers and 35% of graduates in STEM-related fields, according to Unesco. In tech fields, like AI, only one in five professionals is a woman. With the #CodeLikeaGirl programme, Vodacom aims to provide access to STEM education and empower young women with coding skills for future job opportunities. The onsite training will be held at Vodacom Schools of Excellence equipped with laptops and internet connectivity, while virtual training sessions will be available for qualifying learners. The boot camp will introduce girls to coding, robotics, and other digital learning skills to expand their possibilities of pursuing STEM careers. Since its launch in 2017, over 4,000 girls have benefited from the #CodeLikeaGirl programme.
