Satellite images have shown that Russia has recently moved air defense missile systems from two disputed islands off northern Japan. This has raised concerns that Russia may be repurposing these weapons from its Far East region for use in the conflict in Ukraine. The analysis of the satellite images was conducted by Yu Koizumi, a lecturer at the University of Tokyo. Koizumi believes that tanks and artillery previously stored in Sakhalin, a Russian military facility, are also being sent to Ukraine. The missile units equipped with S-300V4 surface-to-air missile systems were previously stationed on the Etorofu and Kunashiri islands. Koizumi suggests that these units may have been redeployed to Russia’s western region near the Ukrainian border in preparation for an attack. He also speculates that a large number of tanks and howitzers from Sakhalin have been sent to Ukraine after undergoing repairs. Troops from Russia’s Far East region are also being dispatched to Ukraine. The dispute between Japan and Russia over Etorofu and Kunashiri islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan and the Southern Kurils in Russia, continues.
