Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar is leading an emergency meeting in Islamabad to discuss electricity rates and consumer bills, as protests erupt across the country due to inflated power bills. The meeting includes officials from the power division and power distribution companies to find ways to provide relief to consumers. Additionally, the government plans to withdraw subsidized electricity for power distribution companies and government officers in grade 17 and above. Protests have taken place in Multan and Lahore, with citizens expressing frustration over high power bills. Some have burned their bills and vowed not to pay them. Political parties, including Jamaat-i-Islami and PML-N, have demanded immediate relief and called for strikes and protests if their demands are not met. Experts believe that lowering taxes and levies on electricity bills is not feasible in the short term due to the pressure to maintain fiscal balance.
