PTI leader Hassaan Khan Niazi, who is Imran Khan’s nephew, has been handed over to the military for trial over his alleged involvement in the May 9 vandalism at Lahore’s Jinnah House. Niazi had been in hiding since the protests on May 9 and 10 and was arrested by the police on August 13. The Peshawar High Court had asked for details about his arrest from the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments. Niazi’s father filed a petition in the Lahore High Court seeking his son’s recovery. A military official wrote a letter to the police requesting Niazi’s custody for a trial by the court martial. The court granted the state prosecutor time to let Niazi’s father meet his son and adjourned the hearing. Niazi’s father’s petition argued that his son’s detention was illegal and violated his rights. It asked for his immediate release and an inquiry into the actions of the respondents.
