Pakistani-American singer Arooj Aftab received the Pride of Performance award during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award is given to citizens who have achieved notable accomplishments. Aftab expressed her gratitude for the recognition in an Instagram post, stating that it was a bright day for women in music and thanking those who have paved the way for her. The award was presented to her by Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Masood Khan, on behalf of the President of Pakistan. Aftab is known for promoting Pakistani music tradition globally and was the first Pakistani artist to win a Grammy award in 2022 for Best Global Music Performance. She was also nominated in the Best New Artist category. Additionally, she was featured on a billboard in Times Square as part of a Spotify campaign. Aftab’s music style is a blend of jazz, classical Sufi, and Urdu lyrics. She released her first album independently in 2015 and is currently based in Brooklyn, New York.
