The Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar has been named the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan. This decision was reached after discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Opposition Leader Raja Riaz. The nomination of Mr. Kakar came as a surprise to many, including those who signed the nomination summary. The initial positive reactions to his nomination showed that he was acceptable to all political parties, especially those in the ruling coalition. It is believed that the BAP has the support of the country’s establishment. However, some critics, such as PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah, expressed surprise and said they had proposed three better options for the position. Raja Riaz claimed that he had proposed Mr. Kakar’s name and that the prime minister had agreed. However, a source in the Presidency said that the caretaker prime minister would take oath in a day or two. The delay in nominating a caretaker prime minister was due to Raja Riaz insisting on his candidate rather than agreeing to the names suggested by the PML-N. Overall, Mr. Kakar’s nomination as caretaker prime minister has been met with mixed reactions.
