Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Raja Riaz are expected to agree on a name for the caretaker prime minister today. President Dr Arif Alvi has asked them to finalize the candidate by August 12. The president reminded them that he dissolved the NA on the advice of the prime minister on August 9. According to the Constitution, the president appoints the caretaker prime minister in consultation with the outgoing prime minister and leader of the opposition. PM Shehbaz questioned the president’s hurry in sending the letter, stating that the Constitution allows for eight days to make the appointment. He added that if a decision is not reached within three days, the parliamentary committee or the Election Commission of Pakistan will decide on the matter. The National Assembly has been dissolved, and the process to appoint a caretaker PM will be conducted according to the Constitution. Three names have been proposed by different parties, but the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has not made a public announcement yet.
