India hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, with Iran expected to become a member and Russian President Vladimir Putin delivering his first address since a failed rebellion. Chinese President Xi Jinping also attended the virtual summit, along with leaders from Central Asian countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that Iran’s full membership would be approved at the summit. Iran has been actively engaging in diplomacy to reduce its isolation, improve its economy, and project strength. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also participated, stating that the summit is important for regional security and prosperity. The SCO, established in 2001, focuses on discussing security and economic matters. Its members include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, while countries like Belarus and Mongolia are invited as observers.
