Maryam Khan, a Pakistani-born US lawmaker, was attacked after attending Eid ul Azha prayers with her family in Hartford, Connecticut. The attacker made suggestive comments to Khan and then assaulted her. The suspect has been arrested and charged with unlawful restraint, assault, breach of peace, and interfering with the police. The motive for the attack is still unknown. Connecticut House Speaker Matt Ritter and Majority Leader Jason Rojas have condemned the attack and expressed support for Khan and her family. State Capitol Police and Hartford Police will conduct a thorough investigation. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont also condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation. Civil rights advocate Farhan Memon urged law enforcement to investigate a possible bias motive behind the attack and ensure the safety of the Muslim community during Eid ul Azha celebrations. Khan is currently recovering mentally and physically from the incident.
