Pakistan and India have exchanged a list of prisoners in each other’s custody, as required by the 2008 Agreement on Consular Access. The exchange of these lists happens twice a year, on January 1 and July 1. Pakistan handed over a list of 308 Indian prisoners (42 civilians and 266 fishermen) to the High Commission of India in Islamabad. In return, India gave a list of 417 Pakistani prisoners (343 civilians and 74 fishermen) in Indian jails. Pakistan has urged India to release and repatriate the Pakistani prisoners who have completed their sentences and have confirmed nationality. In January, Pakistan had requested the early release and repatriation of 51 civilian prisoners and 94 fishermen who have completed their sentences and have confirmed nationality.
