China’s President Xi Jinping will participate in and give a speech at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) on July 4. The summit, chaired by India this year, will be held in a virtual format. The defence and foreign ministers of the SCO attended in-person meetings in India earlier this year. The SCO is a political and security alliance of countries across Eurasia, including China, India, and Russia. It was formed in 2001 by Russia, China, and former Soviet states in Central Asia, and later expanded to include India and Pakistan. The SCO aims to counter Western influence in the region and play a more significant role. After the July summit, Kazakhstan will take over the presidency of the SCO.
