Five South Korean universities have been ranked among the top 100 global universities in the QS World University Rankings. Seoul National University is ranked 41st, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) is ranked 56th, Yonsei University is ranked 76th, Korea University is ranked 79th, and Pohang University of Science and Technology is ranked 100th. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is ranked first, followed by the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, Harvard, and Stanford. The rankings are based on indicators of academic excellence, including students’ employability, research network, and the universities’ efforts to address environmental, social, and governance issues. The ranking system aims to help students identify leading universities around the world. Despite a decline in the school-age population, South Korea’s higher education system has shown a high level of performance comparable to countries with larger populations and economies.
