A feud has erupted between the Russian military and Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Russia’s private Wagner military group, over the invasion of Ukraine. Prigozhin accused Russia of attacking his soldiers and challenged one of President Vladimir Putin’s justifications for the war. Russian generals then accused Prigozhin of trying to mount a coup against Putin. Prigozhin claimed control of Russia’s southern military headquarters and surrounded it with Wagner forces. Tanks were seen on the streets of Rostov, and signs of fighting were visible near Voronezh. Prigozhin declared his forces were headed to Moscow. Russia deployed armored vehicles on the streets and was seen moving military equipment along a major highway. Putin vowed to stabilize the situation, and Russia’s security forces reportedly raided a Wagner building in St. Petersburg. The crisis is considered a significant challenge to the Russian state. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on Russia’s weakness. Meanwhile, Russian forces fired missiles into Kyiv, killing at least three people. The British military emphasized the importance of Russia’s security forces in determining the outcome of the crisis.
