The UK is set to host a summit on artificial intelligence (AI) this autumn, with Chancellor Rishi Sunak hoping to position the country as a key player in the field. The event, prompted by Sunak’s desire to shape AI diplomacy, is set to attract “like-minded” nations, with the government looking to bridge the gap between strict EU regulations and the comparatively light touch US approach. Sunak, who is currently visiting the US, has claimed the UK is a “global leader in AI” and that AI has “an incredible potential to transform our lives” if it is “developed and used in a way that is safe and secure”. Sunak has also arranged a meeting with Palantir founder Alexander Karp during his US trip. The US tech giant is poised to open its European artificial intelligence (AI) headquarters in the UK.
