Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has criticised PTI Chairman Imran Khan for “disinforming local and foreign audiences” about human rights in Pakistan. Sharif accused Khan of manipulating and swaying opinion-makers outside Pakistan through “glib talk laced with fake news and plain misrepresentation.” Sharif’s comments come after Khan claimed he would be tried in a military court and thrown in jail. Khan has hinted multiple times that the military was behind a crackdown on his party. Violence erupted after Khan’s brief arrest by the National Accountability Bureau in Al-Qadir Trust case. The government has since decided to try those responsible in military courts, leading to concerns about human rights violations. The decision led to Cabinet members and parliamentarians being sent abroad to address concerns and “sensitise on the gravity of offenses committed on May 9.”
