Karachi is unlikely to reach a population of 20 million, according to officials overseeing Pakistan’s census. Although a final count is due shortly, there is thought to be little chance of significant change from the existing official figure of 16.05 million residents. Observers have questioned the effectiveness of the latest count, one of several extensions of the census deadline in recent months. Political parties in the city have already criticised existing population estimates, with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Jamaat-i-Islami claiming numbers have been understated. Previously published reports have suggested the true population of Karachi could be as high as 30 million or 35 million.
