President Arif Alvi has called for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party Chairman Imran Khan to denounce the violent incidents that occurred after his arrest on May 9. Speaking on a Geo News interview, Alvi highlighted how the attacks on public property and military bases required not only condemnation but also strict action against the culprits. Additionally, the president called for an independent inquiry into the May 9 events and advocated the respect of human rights during the trials of rioters under the Pakistan Army Act. Alvi expressed concern over the police’s forceful handling of protesters and warned that the human rights situation in Pakistan was already being scrutinised by the world. He also drew attention to the EU’s upcoming review of Pakistan’s GSPPlus status and highlighted that recent events could impact the country’s chances of renewal. Additionally, he refuted claims that Imran Khan was against the appointment of General Asim Munir as the Chief of Army Staff, noting that Khan respected whoever the institution nominated. Finally, he suggested that both the government and PTI should engage in dialogue but without any preconditions.
