Unveiling the unified response plan to Chinese ‘economic coercion,’ G7 raises the stakes to a new level.

The leaders of the G7 nations, including the US, UK, Japan, Canada, Germany, France and Italy, are set to release a statement on China and outline tools to push back against economic coercion, such as making supply chains more resilient, outbound investment measures and export controls to protect sensitive technology. The concerns stem from China’s ability to secure foreign technology to help its military, and the measures will be released at the same time as high-level meetings between the US and China, which follow an agreement between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping last year to rebuild the relationship between the two superpowers. UK officials have said the G7 leaders will announce a platform to identify economic vulnerabilities and to co-ordinate protective measures against what UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called China’s “concerted and strategic economic contest”. The G7 will release its final communique on Saturday, with focus on Ukraine on Sunday. China, in response, has said that the US and its allies are “utilising their great power status…and economic coercion to enforce compliance and engage in coercive diplomacy”.
