The leaders of the G7 group of nations have called for international technical standards for trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) to be developed and adopted. They met in Hiroshima, Japan, and recognised that achieving trustworthy AI could be done in different ways. However, they emphasised the need for digital economy governance to be aligned with democratic values. Generative AI, which is the AI subset that powers ChatGPT, a popular app, was cited specifically in the G7 leaders’ statement. They called for generative AI’s challenges and opportunities to be assessed immediately.
