Tragic fate befell a cherished junior doctor (31) who perished in a devastating accident when her car was drawn into a surging river.

Dr Farah Ahmed, a 31-year-old doctor at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar, died when her car went into the Castlebar River on 20 January. An inquest into her death has been adjourned by the Coroner for Mayo. CCTV footage showed Dr Ahmed’s car reversing at speed through a wire fence before crashing into the river. Fire services and divers arrived on the scene, but Dr Ahmed was pronounced dead. A post-mortem revealed that she died due to drowning. Dr Ahmed was remembered as a “hardworking” and “loved by everybody” member of staff at the hospital by a medical colleague, Dr Fadel Bennani, who conducted the post-mortem. The coroner adjourned the inquest hearing to 18 December for further evidence.
