Toyota’s liquid hydrogen-powered car enters a 24-hour race, but will it make it to the finish line alive?

Toyota has entered a racing car powered by liquid hydrogen into a 24-hour endurance race in Japan, making it the first such car in the world to participate in an official race. The Japanese automaker aims to popularize hydrogen as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuel since it does not emit carbon dioxide when burnt, and it has developed the world’s first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle, the Mirai. Toyota has stated that offering a wide range of green vehicles, including hybrid cars, is more effective in reducing their carbon footprint than solely focusing on electric vehicles. The race at Fuji Speedway in Shizuoka Prefecture is being held through Sunday. Toyota initially aimed to enter a liquid hydrogen vehicle into a race in March 2021, but the plan stalled after a vehicle caught fire during a test run. The use of hydrogen in liquid form instead of its gaseous state would allow for smaller hydrogen fueling stations and double a car’s mileage, according to Toyota.
