The fate of the audio leaks commission hangs in the balance as Justice Faez Isa abruptly halts proceedings.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has deferred the proceedings of the judicial commission formed to investigate audio leaks indefinitely. This follows a directive from the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Umar Ata Bandial, ordering the panel to halt proceedings. The leaks concern a number of high-profile figures, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, causing both political and legal controversy. The federal government established the judicial commission on May 19th, tasking it with investigating the audio leaks and recommending action against those responsible for their release. During the hearing, Bandial expressed concern that the formation of the government-appointed judicial commission had interfered with the judiciary’s internal procedures. The Supreme Court subsequently suspended the government’s May 19th notification to establish the commission and reserved judgement on the petitions. Justice Qazi Faez Isa, the head of the three-member panel, expressed his reservations over the decision to stop the panel from working, noting that the implementation of the Supreme Court rules is mandatory.
