Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), may be banned by the country’s government, according to Defence Minister Khawaja Asif. The move comes following political turbulence since Khan’s arrest on corruption charges in early May. He was subsequently released on bail. Khan’s detention triggered fierce protests during which state buildings were set on fire and army establishments attacked. Following an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee, which discussed trials of the attackers in military courts, the government proposed increasing the number of terrorist courts and enhancing their timings for trials of miscreants. The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, described those behind the damage to state buildings as terrorists, adding that the government would “create an example out of the miscreants… so that such an incident never takes place in Pakistan again”. The protests died down after the Supreme Court ordered Khan’s “immediate release” a couple of days after his detention.
