G-7 science chiefs embark on a perilous mission to maintain the confidentiality of open data and secure research.

Science chiefs from the Group of Seven (G7) nations have met in Sendai, Japan, to agree on “reinforcing international cooperation in the field of research and development”, ahead of the G7 summit in Hiroshima which starts next week. The main topics discussed on Friday included international scientific and technological cooperation on global issues, including climate change and space exploration, as well as the importance of research integrity and security. The nations discussed how best practice can be shared between countries without disclosing critical information and technology, which could be used for military purposes, calling out “some bad-faith actors” who seek to access and “misappropriate knowledge and technology without authorisation”. Topics today will include how to reduce space debris. The G7 is made up of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, plus the European Union.
