Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has called for democratic countries to support Taiwan in the face of pressure from China during a visit to Taipei. Truss warned of “an increasing struggle between democracies and autocracies,” and said that the international community must support Taiwan’s achievements. Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen thanked Truss for her support and said that by acting in solidarity, democracies around the world can increase their strength and extend their values of freedom and democracy. Truss also expressed the desire for like-minded countries to work together on economic challenges posed by authoritarian regimes. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and seeks reunification by force if necessary. China criticized Truss’s visit, accusing her of using Taiwan to grab attention for her own political interests. Truss resigned as prime minister last year after a political crisis caused by her economic plans.
