Delay in High Court judgement on ECP notices served to former governor and CM heightens suspense.

The Peshawar High Court in Pakistan has adjourned a hearing into three petitions against notices issued to leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, including former governor Shah Farman, former chief minister Mahmood Khan and former ministers Anwer Zeb and Muhibullah, for violating the revised code of conduct for local body elections in 2022. The adjournment happened on Tuesday after counsel for the Election Commission of Pakistan requested time to prepare case files following arson attacks on the ECP’s regional office that destroyed records. All four petitioners challenged the revised code of conduct issued on 10 March 2022, which barred public officeholders from campaigning in the second phase of local body elections in 18 districts of the province last year. They also objected to notices issued to them by district monitoring officers as well as Rs50,000 fines imposed on them. Last year, the High Court issued stay orders in favour of the petitioners and directed the ECP not to take any adverse action against them. The case is expected to continue.
