The federal government of Pakistan has formed a three-member judicial commission, led by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, to investigate the validity of leaked audio recordings involving judges. The commission was established under the Inquiry Commission Act 2017 and will include Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Aamer Farooq. In March, an audio recording purportedly of a telephone conversation between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry and his brother emerged. It allegedly mentioned several judges. Later, an alleged phone call between the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s (CJP) mother-in-law and the PTI counsel’s wife was leaked online. The two women can be heard discussing early elections and their support for the chief justice. Recently, CJP Bandial stated the audio leaks on social media have no authenticity. The government has asked the CJP to order a forensic audit of the leaked phone call involving his mother-in-law and said that the judges mentioned in the audio should step down. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has demanded an investigation into the leaks, stating that those involved must be questioned and the judges referred to in the audio should step down.
