Nine leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have left the party following the violence that resulted from the party leader Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9. The latest departures include Maleeka Bukhari, Musarrat and Jamshed Cheema, Dr. Muhammad Afzal, Javed Ansari, Chaudhry Ehsanul Haq, Saeed Akbar Niwani, and Malik Akram Kanhon. Maleeka Bukhari said she split with the party after its leaders and workers “crossed a red line” and demanded that those who attacked military installations be held accountable. The Cheemas quit and also stepped away from mainstream politics. In addition to the departures, PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry was re-arrested by the Punjab police following his earlier release from jail. On the same day, eight politicians, including Ayesha Gulalai, Saleem Briar and Abdullah Yusuf Warraich joined the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q), expressing their willingness to engage in a dialogue with all political parties.
