Japan has announced new sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The sanctions, which include an asset freeze on Russian individuals and groups, a ban on goods being exported to Russia’s military-related organisations, and a ban on the export of construction and engineering services to Russia, target its military and construction and engineering sectors. The 17 individuals and 78 groups hit by the asset freeze include high-level military officials. The export restrictions affect 80 organisations including Russian mobile phone company MegaFon. Other countries have also announced fresh punishments against Russia. Japan is the only country to have suffered atomic bombings during wartime and its top government spokesman, Hirokazu Matsuno, condemned Russia’s plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus, saying Japan could “never tolerate Russia’s threat of nuclear weapons, not to mention their use”.
