Hungary and Greece are reported to have joined forces in opposing the EU’s latest sanctions package aimed at Russia. This package differs from previous sanctions, because it aims to avoid being circumvented by targeting other countries that are helping Moscow dodge its trade embargo. Hungary and Athens are linking their approval for the package to a separate issue involving Ukraine and the “list” of public “war sponsors”, which was compiled by Kyiv. It includes a number of European companies whose Hungarian and Greek counterparties would now like removed. Diplomats suggest that it is now up to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to work with the Ukrainians on a solution; however while Hungary and Greece link their companies’ removal to support for the sanctions, there will be pressure to progress with the package. French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, stated that the package needs to be resolved by the end of next month.
