Imran Khan, the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party, was issued a medical fitness certificate by the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) after he was arrested on May 9th. The certificate, which was released to the media on May 15th, stated that Imran appeared “under stress with anxiety symptoms” and had “little insight about the seriousness and reality of the current situation”. However, the certificate also stated that Imran’s higher mental function was intact and that he was stable and fit to be detained by the National Accountability Bureau. Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel presented the certificate in a press conference, but PTI has since threatened legal action against him for defamation. Many critics have called into question the quality of the report and the competence of those who created and presented it. Some have referred to the entire situation as “a clown show” or a “joke of a letter”.
