Pakistan’s Lucky Cement and the Al-Shumookh group in Iraq have reportedly agreed to increase clinker production capacity by adding a new line of 1.82 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in Samawah, Iraq. The added capacity will play a vital role in achieving self-reliance in terms of clinker availability in Iraq, given the increasing demand for cement due to the revived economic activity and the uptick in construction projects in the country. Najmat-Al-Samawah (NAS), a joint venture cement grinding facility of the two firms, also entered into an Engineering & Procurement Contract for the said expansion. The total domestic and international capacities of Lucky Cement will rise to 21.48 MTPA of clinker and cement, once the expansion is complete. Lucky Cement, which operates in diversified businesses such as automobiles, chemicals and agricultural sciences, saw a massive increase in its profit during the first quarter of 2023.
