The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has sparked concerns about disinformation, job loss, discrimination, privacy, and a possible dystopian future. Generative AI technology, capable of producing fake text, audio, images, and videos that appear to be human-made, is becoming increasingly accessible to everyone, including malicious actors seeking to spread disinformation. This has resulted in the growth of businesses focused on detecting the use of AI, with companies such as Sensity AI, Fictitious.AI, and Originality.AI offering tools to identify if something was made with artificial intelligence. Even major tech companies like Intel are involved in the development of AI detection tools. Detection programs, however, inherently lag behind the generative technology they are trying to detect, and by the time a defense system recognizes the work of a new chatbot or image generator, developers have already come up with a new iteration that can evade that defense. Experts suggest that separating real from fake AI-generated content will require digital forensics tactics such as reverse image searches and IP address tracking. The Content Authenticity Initiative, led by Adobe and with members such as The New York Times and Stability AI, aims to establish standards that apply traceable credentials to digital work upon creation. Overall, the generative AI market is projected to exceed $109 billion by 2030.
