16 dead as coal-rich tribal mountains ignite deadly clash in Pakistan.

Sixteen people were killed in a dispute between two tribes in Pakistan’s northwest. The Akhorwal tribe fired on the Suni Khel tribe as they marked their territory. Both tribes were armed, resulting in a high number of casualties. Previous attempts to resolve the dispute had failed. Darra Adam Khel is in the Kohat district, home to the largest coal reserves in the region, and disputes over deposits are common between tribes. Mining is an important source of employment and income for the local community. Despite safety concerns and a lack of regulatory oversight, mining continues. The situation in the area has been brought under control with the involvement of a local jirga, according to the police. Darra Adam Khel was part of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), which was merged with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in 2018.
