Carleton University professor Leah West has been appointed to an advisory board overseeing Pornhub, one of the world’s most popular adult websites. West, a national security law and counter-terrorism expert, is one of six members tasked with making the site safer and more ethically sound. Pornhub has come under mounting criticism for carrying illegal content, including videos of child abuse and rape. The site has been the subject of lawsuits and visa credit cards recently cut ties with the platform. West said she did not see her role as “cleaning up the site or righting past wrongs” but instead aimed to make the industry as safe as possible. She added that being an adviser to Pornhub allowed her an opportunity to be a part of the “Gloabl Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism.” Other members of the advisory board include a porn researcher, an employment lawyer, a body builder and a PhD candidate studying porn platforms. However, activist Laila Mickelwait, the founder and CEO of the Justice Defense Fund, said an advisory board was “meaningless” unless it had the power to make decisions.
