Elon Musk said he didn’t know “what exactly happened” when Twitter removed content related to a documentary criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He mentioned that some rules for social media content in India are “quite strict.” In January, India blocked a BBC documentary about Modi’s leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots and prohibited sharing clips on social media. The government ordered Twitter to block over 50 tweets linking to the video. Musk said that if they have to choose between their people going to prison or complying with the laws, they will comply with the laws. India’s strict regulations on US tech firms like Twitter, WhatsApp, and Amazon have made it difficult for businesses to expand in the country.
