UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the 1988 Northern Ireland peace accord, known as the Good Friday Agreement, ahead of US President Joe Biden’s visit to mark its 25th anniversary. The agreement helped end decades of violence in the UK province. Sunak will participate in events to commemorate the signing and will welcome Biden to Northern Ireland on Tuesday. They will have a bilateral meeting and attend a commemorative conference at Queen’s University in Belfast. The UK will also host a “Northern Ireland Investment Summit” in September to encourage economic growth. Biden, who is Irish-American, will visit the Republic of Ireland during his four-day trip.
