The government of Pakistan has called on Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial to step down due to his controversial position. This demand was made by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb and supported by PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam. A complaint was also filed against the Chief Justice for ‘misconduct’ and a probe into the constitution of a bench for suo motu proceedings on Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elections was requested.
Ms Aurangzeb questioned why a bench was formed and a decision made when there was no petition. She said that political parties wanted a full-court bench so that the decision would be acceptable to people. The minister also blamed the court’s handling of the election matter for creating a ‘constitutional crisis’.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif demanded that CJP Bandial resign because of his ‘glaring tilt’ towards the rival party, PTI. She accused the top judge of violating the law and Constitution to favor Imran Khan and the PTI. Her father, Nawaz Sharif, also tweeted on the issue, saying that courts should rescue nations from crises, not push them further into trouble.
A private citizen filed a complaint against CJP Bandial, seeking a probe into the initiation of suo motu proceedings on KP, Punjab elections, and the constitution of a bench for the purpose. The complaint alleged that the CJP was guilty of misconduct and should be removed from office immediately.
