Apple’s long-awaited mixed reality headset may face struggles as demand for high-end virtual reality (VR) is currently low, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Sony has reportedly reduced its production plan for the PS VR2 by about 20%, while the product lifecycle shipment for Meta’s Quest Pro has been about 300,000 units. Pico also saw 40% lower-than-expected shipments in 2022, the analyst reported. Apple’s headset is rumoured to cost around $3,000, which is double the price of Meta’s Quest Pro, a headset that recently had its price dropped from $1,500 to $1,000. Apple’s headset offers advanced hand tracking, will not require a controller and can recreate another person’s entire body in a one-on-one FaceTime call. However, the headset will require an external battery pack to operate. Apple may be targeting developers with the initial release, rather than the mass market, so may be looking for a different pool of buyers than the PSVR 2. The headset is focused on “copresence”, which is similar to Meta’s argument for the Quest Pro. The headset might have a steep hill to climb, even though it might become a monster device due to its high pricing.
