Maryam Nawaz of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) criticised remarks made by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial during the Supreme Court (SC) hearing on the postponement of Punjab polls. During the hearing, the chief justice commented on how some members of parliament had previously been imprisoned, declared as traitors, but are now respected as representatives of the people. Following the comments, both the PML-N’s Nawaz and Maryam criticised the chief justice’s stance. Nawaz stated that the government jailed opposition members, including him, on fake charges, whilst Maryam accused the chief justice of facilitating Imran Khan’s path to power. She also accused the chief justice of “rewriting the Constitution” to facilitate Khan and called for him to take notice of the recent audio leaks purportedly featuring Justice Naqvi. Following the SC hearing, the court decided to quash the electoral body’s decision to postpone Punjab Assembly polls until October 8, deeming it unconstitutional.
